How To Play Tab On A Guitar

A common question from beginners everywhere is this : How To Read Guitar Tabs. Well the answer to this daunting musical question is way easier than one beginning player may think.

First of all, when you look at tabs you have to realize that you are not looking at what is commonly referred to as the “Staff” or “Clef”. The staff usually has five lines and tab normally has 6 lines but can have more. Why you ask? Because sometimes there could be a guitar with seven strings, 4 strings, or even 8 strings!.

Yep you guessed it, the lines in tab directly represent the strings on any instrument. The numbers on the lines/strings represent what fret you are to play on that given string. Normally tab is set up to illustrate the lowest sounding string to be on the bottom and the highest is on the top. That means if you are playing guitar the high E string is the top line. So if you see for instance the number 3 on the top string, you are to press doen that string on the third fret.

Easy enough? I thought so. Once you get the hang of it, it really doesn’t take a whole lot to really get the ball rolling on this stuff.

Now, so far we have been told which fret and what string. But the last element is” when” to play it. Timing can be a dicey subject for some, and not so much for others. Generally speaking it is somewhat difficult for most people to effectively grasp it within a short period of time. It requires sustained practice, diligence, and a good sense of rhythm.

If you are just beginning guitar or even if you have some experience, you may want to look at this. The series is very helpful in establishing a good solid understanding of rhythm as well as the music itself.
